Stefano Donnarumma to resign as FS chief after meeting with Transport Minister Matteo Salvini

Stefano Donnarumma, chief executive of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS), will submit his resignation in the coming days, according to sources at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT). The decision follows a face‑to‑face meeting with Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, during which both expressed gratitude to the more than 90,000 FS employees and agreed that Donnarumma will close the most important dossiers before stepping down.

The ministry highlighted that FS has met its PNRR targets, nearing the €25 billion investment goal, managing roughly 1,300 construction sites daily, improving punctuality by 7 % in June 2026 versus June 2025, and reporting a €30 million profit in the latest accounts. With the PNRR phase completed, the government plans to launch a “phase two” of the group’s management, appointing an internal successor – the name most frequently mentioned is Gianpiero Strisciuglio, current CEO of Trenitalia.

The resignation is presented as a consensual step intended to address ongoing service disruptions and to enable a smoother transition as FS moves into the next operational phase.
