Ferry capsizes off Northern Cyprus coast, leaving 8 dead and 18 missing

A passenger ferry has capsized off the coast of Northern Cyprus near Kyrenia, resulting in at least eight deaths and leaving 18 people missing. The vessel, which was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members, began taking on water after being struck by two waves.

Unal Üstel, the Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, stated that the captain and seven crew members have been detained as part of an investigation into the tragedy. While a massive search and rescue operation involving helicopters, coast guard vessels, and ambulances is underway, authorities are also working to recover the ship's black box to determine the exact cause of the sinking.

Survivors described chaotic scenes inside the tilting vessel. One witness, Ayten Bicer, recounted the harrowing moment she lost contact with her 12-year-old daughter during the capsize. The ferry was reportedly delayed due to poor weather conditions and was originally scheduled to travel to Turkey on Saturday.
