MV June Aster ferry fire kills five and leaves dozens missing near Palawan
A major search and rescue operation is underway in the waters off Coron, Palawan, after a fire broke out on the passenger ferry M/V June Aster. The vessel, owned by Atienza Interisland Ferries Inc., was traveling from Manila to Coron when the blaze erupted on Wednesday evening near Barangay Marcilla.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has confirmed that at least five people have died and approximately 87 individuals remain missing. As of the latest reports, 43 people have been successfully rescued, including two Chilean nationals. Rescuers have faced significant challenges due to intense heat, thick smoke, and strong ocean currents, which have prevented teams from boarding the vessel to conduct a thorough search.
Preliminary reports from survivors suggest the fire may have originated in the cargo hold. The vessel’s manifest listed a total of 134 people, comprising 117 passengers and 17 crew members. Authorities are continuing to coordinate with the Philippine Army, Marines, and local government units to locate the missing and determine the exact cause of the incident.
