Ferry projects face budget constraints and service concerns
The New Zealand government's project to replace the Interislander ferries reached its $1.7 billion budget ceiling in June. This cap has necessitated the removal of certain sustainability, safety, and value-for-money enhancements. A review indicated that a lack of detailed business cases and clear economic frameworks has limited decision-making transparency. While Minister for Rail Winston Peters stated that costs were only added where they provided commercial value without delaying the programme, documents from Ferry Holdings show programme costs have exceeded the $1.747 billion envelope identified by Cabinet in March.
In the United Kingdom, Isle of Wight MP Joe Robertson has raised concerns in Parliament regarding ferry services. Robertson accused corporate interests of extracting over £200 million from Isle of Wight ferry services over the last decade. He expressed skepticism toward the newly established Cross-Solent Transport Group, warning that government-backed talks might become a ‘talking shop’ if ferry companies do not engage seriously to address pricing, timetables, and reliability.
