Fertő Lake development sparks political debate in Hungary

Political tensions have resurfaced regarding the future of Lake Fertő, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Hungary. During a parliamentary session on September 21, Anikó Hallerné Dr. Nagy of the Tisza Party delivered an unscheduled speech addressing the management of the lake.

Hallerné Dr. Nagy criticized the previous eight years of development, alleging that public funds totaling over 12 billion forints were wasted without tangible results. She accused the current administration of allowing landscape destruction and benefiting a circle of government-linked entrepreneurs, specifically mentioning Lőrinc Mészáros. She stated her goal is to ensure the Hungarian side of the lake belongs to the people again.

In response, the Sopron organization of Fidesz issued a statement emphasizing their goal of progress rather than seeking conflict, though they did not address specific allegations in detail.
