Fertile Ground Food Cooperative breaks ground in Raleigh
The Fertile Ground Food Cooperative has officially broken ground on a community-owned grocery store and gathering space on Garner Road in southeast Raleigh, North Carolina. The project follows over a decade of organizing that began around 2011-2012 after the closure of local Kroger stores in 2013 left the area with limited access to fresh food.
More than 1,000 members hold ownership stakes in the cooperative, allowing residents to vote on major decisions and shape their own food access. The facility is designed to function as both a grocery store and a community hub, featuring shared spaces intended to serve as a center for local activity.
Organizers noted the project addresses significant food access disparities in Wake County, where approximately 145,000 residents face hunger. The cooperative aims to provide higher-quality produce and economic empowerment to the neighborhood. Until the permanent location is operational, the cooperative continues to host farmers markets on the second and fourth Sundays of each month.
