Fervo Energy achieves first power at Cape Station geothermal plant
Fervo Energy has announced that its Cape Station project in Beaver County, Utah, has achieved first power, marking the world’s first utility-scale enhanced geothermal development to reach this milestone.
Phase I of the project consists of an approximately 100 MW installation featuring three 33-megawatt GeoBlocks. The first GeoBlock has already begun delivering power and is expected to reach its contractual commercial operations date by October 1, 2026. The remaining two blocks are projected to reach commercial operations by January 1, 2027.
The technology utilizes horizontal drilling techniques adapted from the oil and gas industry to engineer fluid pathways through hot dry rock. This allows for the capture of heat to generate power continuously, regardless of weather conditions, providing a stable alternative to intermittent sources like wind and solar. The project has already secured approximately 900 MW of offtake through power purchase agreements with entities including Southern California Edison and Shell Energy.
