Benfica District project remains under review by Lisbon City Council

The Benfica District project, a major redevelopment plan for the area surrounding the Estádio da Luz, is currently under review by the Lisbon City Council. Despite claims from a former communications director that the project had been rejected, both the club and the municipality have clarified that the proposal is still in the appreciation phase.

Benfica submitted a final version of the project on September 18, incorporating several suggested modifications from the city council. The ambitious €220 million initiative aims to transform the stadium surroundings by constructing a multi-use pavilion with a 10,000-person capacity, new commercial and dining spaces, athlete accommodation, and a central plaza for fans. Additionally, the plan includes a €75 million renovation of the stadium facade and a potential capacity expansion to 80,000 seats.

The project was approved by club members in January and is intended to be completed by mid-2029, aligning with Portugal’s co-hosting of the 2030 World Cup.
