Fessenheim nuclear plant decommissioning enters public consultation phase

The French Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority (ASNR) has launched two public consultations regarding the decommissioning of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant, which ceased operations in 2020.

One consultation focuses on technical prescriptions following a decommissioning decree signed in May. The ASNR has stated that the dismantling of reactor vessels and internals involves “significant stakes,” requiring prior approval before operations begin to ensure risks of radioactive substance dissemination and worker radiation exposure are managed.

EDF has committed to achieving a radiological and chemical state compatible with future industrial reuse of the site. However, the plan to maintain certain underground structures has faced criticism from anti-nuclear groups such as Stop Fessenheim. The ASNR is requiring EDF to demonstrate full compliance with radiological and chemical neutrality, specifically regarding underlying soils and remaining underground structures.
