Flup literary festival in Rio de Janeiro focuses on Black feminism

The 16th edition of the Festa Literária das Periferias (Flup) is taking place in central Rio de Janeiro, running through Sunday at Praça Tiradentes and the Teatro Carlos Gomes. This year’s festival follows the theme ‘As Filhas das Filhas das Filhas’, focusing on Black feminism and honoring Ana Maria Gonçalves, the first Black woman elected to the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

Festival director Julio Ludemir noted that the theme reflects the ongoing social revolution in Brazil driven by affirmative action. The programming includes debates on intersectionality with figures like Kimberlé Crenshaw, as well as discussions on samba and cultural heritage featuring intellectuals such as Nei Lopes.

In a separate cultural initiative in Rio, the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB RJ) is hosting free professional development workshops for women in October as part of the ‘Amazônicas: Poéticas femininas’ exhibition. These workshops cover executive production for visual arts and performance project creation, aimed at advancing women's careers in the creative economy.
