Festival campers strip license plates amid theft fears, police warn of fuel fraud

At German music festivals, some attendees are removing their vehicle registration plates while staying in on‑site camping areas. The practice gained attention after at least 50 rear plates were reported stolen at the Parookaville festival near Weeze Airport in 2025. Police suspect the stolen plates are being used for illegal fuel‑pump fraud, where thieves briefly attach a stolen plate to their own car, fill the tank at a self‑service station and leave without paying, leaving the original owner liable for the charge. The theft of plates can also facilitate other crimes, such as disguising vehicles used in robberies or attacks. Authorities advise festival‑goers to keep plates visible behind the windshield or report any theft immediately to avoid further misuse.
