Festive demand drives up flower and commodity prices in India

Festive celebrations for Gowri-Ganesha and Vinayagar Chaturthi have led to significant surges in market activity and commodity prices across parts of India.

In Mysuru, shoppers have flocked to major markets including Devaraja, Mandi, and Vani Vilas to make last-minute purchases for textiles, garments, and puja articles. The demand has driven up the cost of various fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Notable price points include Mysuru Mallige at Rs. 300 per 250 grams and various fruits like apples and pomegranates selling between Rs. 250 and Rs. 300 per kg.

In Dharmapuri, flower prices have seen a sharp increase due to high seasonal demand and reduced supply caused by erratic weather and El Niño effects. Traders report that prices for staples such as jasmine and crossandra have doubled. For instance, crossandra rose from Rs. 700 to Rs. 1,600 per kg, while star jasmine increased from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000 per kg. The shortage is attributed to a lack of rainfall affecting the cultivation areas in the district.
