Turkey's 'Terror-Free Turkey' law sparks political debate
Turkey's political landscape is reacting to the passage of the 'Terror-Free Turkey' framework law. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek stated the law passed with 467 votes and will trigger legal processes for those surrendering or currently imprisoned once the laying down of weapons is confirmed by the National Security Council.
Gürlek noted that terrorism has caused an estimated 2.3 trillion dollars in economic losses and expressed hope for increased tourism and stability in regions like Tunceli. He warned against attempts to sabotage the process.
In contrast, İYİ Party leader Müsavat Dervişoğlu criticized the law, describing it as a 'great uprising against the Turkish nation' and an 'act of betrayal.' He expressed suspicion regarding the process's impact on the constitutional order and the unitary state structure. Dervişoğlu also highlighted a physical attack on İYİ Party Bursa Deputy Selçuk Türkoğlu during a visit to veterans, calling for accountability from the Ministry of Interior.
MHP Deputy Chairman Feti Yıldız defended the initiative, characterizing the 'Terror-Free Turkey' vision as a comprehensive state policy aimed at national survival, democratic participation, and economic development rather than a mere security measure. He urged for the inclusion of diverse social groups and the use of careful language to explain the law's objectives to the public.
