Feyenoord football history: UEFA Cup milestones and reflections

Historical accounts highlight significant moments in the history of the Dutch football club Feyenoord. In September 1986, during the opening round of the UEFA Cup, Feyenoord traveled to Újmecsekalja to face the Hungarian side PMSC. In a match attended by approximately 14,000 spectators, PMSC secured a victory against the Dutch top-tier team. The decisive goal was scored by Ferenc Mészáros in the 26th minute following a header from a cross by Lajos Dobány.

Separately, former Feyenoord captain Paul Bosvelt reflected on the club’s UEFA Cup triumph 25 years ago. Bosvelt, who currently serves as a scout for Go Ahead Eagles, recalled the historic 2002 campaign that culminated in a 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in De Kuip. He described the journey, which included a transition from the Champions League to the UEFA Cup after finishing third in a group containing Bayern Munich and Spartak Moscow, as a period where the team frequently ‘overperformed’ despite facing significant challenges.
