Ffc Ricerca announces 3.4 million euro investment in cystic fibrosis research

The Ffc Ricerca foundation has announced a 3.4 million euro investment to fund nine advanced scientific projects aimed at advancing cystic fibrosis treatments. A primary focus is the Restart-Cftr international project, which seeks to develop RNA-based molecular therapies for patients with “stop mutations” (nonsense mutations). These specific genetic variants currently lack effective treatments because traditional CFTR protein modulators are ineffective against them.

Additionally, the IRCCS Burlo Garofolo has launched a study to improve pregnancy safety for women living with cystic fibrosis. Funded by a 95,300 euro grant from the Ffc Ricerca foundation, the project utilizes 3D models to evaluate the impact of CFTR modulator therapies during gestation and to study the role of the CFTR protein in placental development. This research is a collaborative effort involving specialists from the University of Trieste, ICGEB, and the Institute of Anatomical Pathology of ASUFC.
