Paraíso Mayor Alfonso Baca Sevilla flees amid FGR raids in Tabasco

The Attorney General's Office (FGR) has launched a series of raids, known as ‘Operativo Enjambre’, in Paraíso, Tabasco, targeting municipal officials for alleged irregularities in the management of public resources and potential illicit enrichment.

At least six municipal employees have been detained, including the Director of Public Works, Edison García Wilson, and the Director of Finance and Administration, Demetrio Velázquez Castellanos. Other detainees reportedly include the mayor's personal driver and various logistical staff. Federal agents conducted searches at approximately ten properties in various neighborhoods.

The Mayor of Paraíso, Alfonso Baca Sevilla, reportedly evaded capture during the operation and remains a fugitive. While his administration claims he is continuing his duties and preparing a legal defense, local reports suggest he fled alongside family members.

Tabasco Governor Javier May Rodríguez has denied allegations of political persecution, stating that the state executive does not intervene in federal investigations and emphasizing that ‘there are no untouchables in the state of Tabasco.’ Documents show the municipality reported nearly 96.8 million pesos in expenditures during the fourth quarter of 2025, primarily for security and public services, which are now under scrutiny.
