FGTS debt reaches R$ 12.6 billion, affecting 11 million Brazilian workers
The number of Brazilian workers affected by delayed FGTS (Severance Indemnity Fund) deposits has risen to 11 million as of June. The total debt owed by companies has reached R$ 12.6 billion, up from R$ 10 billion and 9.5 million affected workers reported in September of last year.
FGTS deposits typically equal 8% of an employee's gross salary and are intended for use during unemployment, retirement, or home purchases. Some workers have reported that while payments appeared on their paystubs, the funds were never actually deposited into their accounts.
To verify status, workers should use the Caixa FGTS app to check monthly statements. Those who identify discrepancies can report the situation to the Ministry of Labor. Companies failing to make these deposits face penalties, including the loss of the FGTS Regularity Certificate, which can prevent them from obtaining bank loans or participating in public tenders. Since March of last year, labor inspections have recovered approximately R$ 6.2 billion for the fund.
