FIA acknowledges flaws in F1 ADUO engine development system

The FIA has acknowledged flaws in the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) system implemented for the 2026 Formula 1 engine regulations. Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA single-seater director, admitted that while the measurements used were precise, the system itself requires adjustments to address existing weaknesses.

The ADUO system was designed to assist struggling engine manufacturers by providing extra development opportunities if their internal combustion engine (ICE) performance falls 2% or more behind the strongest unit on the grid. However, controversy has arisen because the current methodology focuses primarily on the ICE, largely overlooking the critical role of the Energy Recovery System (ERS) in total power output.

This imbalance has led to paddock speculation, with some teams suspected of intentionally limiting performance to qualify for development aids. Currently, Red Bull Powertrains sits at the top of the rankings, serving as the benchmark for other manufacturers. The FIA is considering revising the system's parameters in the coming years to ensure it more accurately reflects the real-world performance of modern power units.
