FIA condemns online abuse against stewards after Dutch GP

The FIA has issued a strong condemnation following a wave of online hate and threats directed at race stewards after the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. The controversy stems from drive-through penalties issued to Alpine driver Franco Colapinto and Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad during the opening lap. Both drivers were penalized for overtaking maneuvers performed under double waved yellow flags, which were deployed following a heavy crash involving Max Verstappen.

While the stewards acknowledged the complexity of the situation caused by debris on the track, the penalties were applied according to the regulations. Colapinto described the sanctions as “extremely harsh,” a sentiment echoed by some fans. The situation escalated when Sean Summers, marketing director for Colapinto’s sponsor Mercado Libre, publicly questioned the integrity and competence of the officials on social media.

This criticism triggered a surge of insults and personal attacks against FIA officials and the Alpine team. In response, the FIA reaffirmed its stance through its ‘United Against Online Abuse’ initiative, stating that while disagreement with decisions is part of sport, “threats and personal attacks are unacceptable.” Alpine has expressed its confidence in the stewards, noting that while the penalties were severe, they were applied consistently and in accordance with the rules.
