FIA considers adding 12th Formula 1 team from China
FIA President Mohammed ben Sulayem has indicated that the governing body may open a process to add a 12th team to the Formula 1 grid. He expressed a strong preference for this new entry to be a Chinese manufacturer, citing the growth of the Chinese automotive industry and the sport's existing presence in the country.
Ben Sulayem confirmed that he has held meetings with representatives from BYD and Geely, both of whom have demonstrated interest in joining the championship. He emphasized that any prospective team must present serious proposals and adhere to all established Formula 1 regulations, noting that there will be no regulatory changes specifically to accommodate new entrants.
The discussion regarding grid expansion follows the recent addition of Cadillac as the 11th team. Ben Sulayem noted that both the FIA and Formula One Management (FOM) are aligned on the possibility of further expansion.
