FIA declares Red Bull power unit the top performer in ADUO evaluation, prompting surprise from Verstappen

The FIA evaluated Formula 1 power‑unit performance under the Additional Development Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) system, focusing on internal‑combustion output. Red Bull Powertrains’ engine was judged the best, while Mercedes fell more than 2 % behind the benchmark and will receive extra development allowances. Ferrari, Honda and Audi are measured over 4 % behind, qualifying them for two additional performance upgrades this season and two more in 2027.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen said he was surprised by the ranking, stating, “From the outside, one might say it’s fantastic. But we are primarily surprised because we don’t feel like we are the best.” Honda Racing president Koji Watanabe acknowledged Honda will receive ADUO relief, calling the gap “very frustrating” and pledging to accelerate development, targeting a summer‑time engine update despite budget‑cap constraints.
