FIA Defends 2026 Formula One Rule Changes Amid Manufacturer and Driver Criticism

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) is under fire for the 2026 Formula One technical regulations. Former driver David Coulthard and several manufacturers have accused the rule package of being flawed, while drivers such as Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton complained after the Belgian Grand Prix that the cars rely too heavily on energy‑management systems.

The FIA responded that it had identified many of the issues before the season began. Director of Cars Nikolas Tombazis said, “We had anticipated a large part of the problems they raise today.” He added that the governing body cannot amend the rules without the consent of a majority of constructors, requiring approval from at least four of the five manufacturers.

To address the shortcomings, the FIA has introduced aerodynamic tweaks and plans to increase battery capacity and adjust power‑unit output for 2027 and 2028, shifting the thermal‑electric split to 60/40 by 2028. Manufacturers, however, argue that the governance structure limits timely fixes, leaving the sport to grapple with the contested regulations throughout the season.
