FIA mandates separation of F1 resources from other racing series

The FIA World Motor Sport Council has approved new regulations requiring Formula 1 teams to strictly separate personnel, facilities, and IT systems from any activities outside the category starting in 2027.

The measure aims to prevent teams from bypassing the current $215 million budget cap by utilizing resources from other racing programs, such as the World Endurance Championship (WEC) or Formula E, without those costs being accounted for in the F1 budget. The regulations will introduce physical and digital restrictions, including designated restricted zones within factories and tighter controls over access to wind tunnels, simulators, and test benches.

Several manufacturers with multi-series interests are expected to be affected, including Ferrari, Aston Martin, Alpine, and Cadillac, all of which have programs in the WEC. Other teams like McLaren and Ford will also be impacted due to their involvement in WEC classes or power unit projects. The FIA's decision follows suspicions that shared corporate structures were being used to transfer human and technological resources between divisions to gain an unfair competitive advantage.
