FIA opens Remote Operations Center to support Formula 1 racing
The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has officially opened its new Remote Operations Center (ROC) at Biggin Hill in the United Kingdom. The multimillion-pound facility was developed in collaboration with Formula 1 and is located within the championship's Media & Technology Centre.
Designed to enhance the speed, accuracy, and consistency of race officiating, the ROC provides around-the-clock support to Race Control and stewards for Formula 1, Formula 2, and Formula 3. Analysts at the center process data from over 140 live audio and video feeds, car-positioning telemetry, and team radio communications to identify potential violations such as jump starts, track limit infractions, and pit lane offenses.
The center utilizes advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence-assisted shape recognition, computer vision, and automated radio-message tagging, to flag incidents for officials. The FIA emphasized that these tools are intended to support, rather than replace, the human officials responsible for sporting decisions. The facility also serves as a hub for the FIA High Performance Programme (HPP) to train future officials and conduct post-event reviews to refine regulations.
