FIA President Ben Sulayem seeks to keep Fernando Alonso in F1
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed a strong commitment to keeping Fernando Alonso in Formula 1, stating it is ‘not acceptable’ for the two-time world champion to retire due to poor car performance. Ben Sulayem has held discussions with Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll to address the team's competitive struggles, particularly regarding the performance of their Honda power units.
Alonso has voiced significant frustration with the current generation of F1 cars, criticizing a technical reliance on battery deployment that he believes limits driver skill and bravery. He has suggested that the current regulations do not provide a proper sporting challenge and has expressed interest in seeing more significant engine or regulatory changes before the 2031 cycle.
To encourage Alonso to remain in the sport, the FIA is considering technical interventions. These may include refining the ADUO mechanism to allow Honda to accelerate its development or adjusting the balance between internal combustion and electrical power. Alonso is currently weighing his options for 2027, including potential moves to the World Endurance Championship.
