FIA ranks Red Bull's engine best for 2026 season, prompting Red Bull protest

The FIA evaluated the internal‑combustion engine (ICE) component of the 2026 Formula 1 power units and concluded that Red Bull Ford Powertrains produced the highest‑performing ICE. Mercedes was measured 2‑4 % slower, qualifying it for a modest ADUO upgrade, while Ferrari and other manufacturers fell further behind and received larger development allowances.

Under the ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) system, the top‑ranked engine cannot be modified during the season, whereas manufacturers trailing the leader receive in‑season homologated upgrades and extra budget. Red Bull, which has not won a race this year, expressed surprise and lodged a protest, questioning the methodology that evaluates only the ICE and not the hybrid components. Max Verstappen said, “I think we were all a little bit surprised with that news,” and Lewis Hamilton added, “I mean it is definitely a surprise because Red Bull and Mercedes engines are very, very close.” Dutch driver Tom Coronel also described the ranking as a “big political game.”
