FIA to close Red Bull aerodynamic loophole for 2027 season
The FIA is reportedly planning to close an aerodynamic loophole utilized by Red Bull Racing ahead of the 2027 Formula 1 season. The innovation, which was first introduced at the Austrian Grand Prix in June, involves the use of a floor body stay—a cable running along the ridge of the sidepod.
Technical experts note that while regulations typically enforce a large minimum radius for bodywork curves to prevent aggressive aerodynamic shaping, the presence of this support allows the area near it to have a radius of only 20mm. This enables the team to utilize sharper sidepod edges to better control airflow.
To prevent this solution from being carried over into future seasons, the FIA intends to restrict the permitted dimensions for these floor supports, potentially reducing the allowed radius from 20mm to just 5mm. This regulatory change will force Red Bull to redesign this section of the car for the 2027 regulations.
