Italy cycling infrastructure sees expansion in Pisa and criticism in Perugia

In Italy, developments in cycling infrastructure are meeting both expansion and criticism. In Pisa, Councilor Angelo Ciavarrella reported that the city's cycling network has grown to over 60 kilometers from 36 kilometers in 2018. Supported by approximately 13.5 million euros in investments, including PNRR funding, new connections are planned through 2027 to increase network continuity.

Conversely, the FIAB Perugia Pedala association has strongly criticized the completion of the PINQuA project in the Ponte San Giovanni district of Perugia. The association described the results as a ‘lost opportunity’ for urban mobility, citing interrupted paths, insufficient protection, and a lack of a continuous, safe network. While a section of via della Scuola was praised for using a lane carved directly from the roadway, other areas like via Manzoni and via Nino Bixio were criticized for being one-way, having gaps, or lacking physical separation from vehicle traffic.
