Tuscan hospitals face staff safety risks and surgical service cuts

Labor unions in Tuscany are raising alarms regarding deteriorating conditions and service reductions in regional hospitals. In Pisa, the Fials union has reported serious safety risks for staff working in the Psychiatric Diagnosis and Care Service (SPDC) at Santa Chiara. The union cites high tensions and operational difficulties, noting that staff are managing complex cases exacerbated by a shortage of beds in secure residential facilities (REMS). Fials has requested a meeting with the Prefect of Pisa to address these security concerns and the potential transfer of staff seeking safer environments.

Simultaneously, in Pistoia, the CGIL union has expressed concern over the reduction of surgical activities at San Jacopo Hospital. Following the retirement of several surgeons and a recent reorganization, the hospital has seen a reduction of 12 surgical beds. While some changes are presented as temporary, the union fears a permanent downsizing of the facility's capabilities, following previous cuts such as the suppression of nighttime orthopedic emergency services.
