Snowstorm Strands Over 100 Tourists in Argentina's Fiambalá Andes

A severe snowstorm hit the road to the Balcón del Pissis viewpoint in Fiambalá, Catamarca Province, at about 4,550 m altitude, trapping more than 30 vehicles and over 100 tourists. Heavy machinery such as tractors and excavators was deployed to clear the snow, which had accumulated up to two metres in places.

The rescue effort, launched on Tuesday 28 February and continuing into Wednesday, involved the Argentine National Gendarmerie, provincial police, firefighters, civil‑defence units and the mining company Zijin‑Liex. Around 120 people were evacuated; 42 were taken to the Fiambalá hospital, two for early signs of hypothermia, and one remained admitted. No fatalities were reported.
