Fiat 147 legacy highlighted by historical impact and new concept designs
The Fiat 147, originally launched in 1976 and produced in Betim, Brazil, remains a significant milestone in automotive history. The model introduced several technical innovations to the Brazilian market, including a transverse engine layout that optimized interior space and the use of radial tires, laminated windshields, and articulated steering columns.
Notably, the 147 was a pioneer in the development of ethanol as a fuel source, with a dedicated version released in 1979 that became the first mass-produced vehicle in the world to run on ethanol. Its modular platform allowed for various body styles, including station wagons, sedans, vans, and pickups.
In recent creative developments, Brazilian artist Kleber Silva, known as KDesign AG, has released concept renderings reimagining the 147 for the modern era. These designs include both a standard Fiat version and a more aggressive Abarth version, styled as contemporary small electric vehicles that retain visual cues from the original 1970s model.
