Fiat 147 Marks 50 Years as Brazil’s First Mass‑Produced Ethanol Car

The Fiat 147, the first model Fiat built in Brazil, celebrates its 50th anniversary. Production began in 1976 at the Betim plant in Minas Gerais, with the official launch held in Ouro Preto. The compact hatchback was adapted for local conditions, featuring a transverse engine, radial tires and laminated windshields.

In 1979 the 147 became the world’s first car manufactured in series to run solely on ethanol, earning the nickname “Cachacinha.” The model’s success helped establish Fiat’s presence in Brazil and laid the groundwork for the modern flex‑fuel fleet. The vehicle spawned a family of derivatives, including the Panorama wagon and a small pickup, and contributed to the growth of the Betim complex, now part of Stellantis.

Fiat commemorated the milestone by highlighting the 147’s role in pioneering ethanol use and influencing Brazil’s automotive market for decades.
