Fiat history of turbo engine evolution in Brazil
Fiat played a pivotal role in the evolution of turbo engine technology in the Brazilian automotive market. While turbochargers in the late 1970s and early 1980s were often associated with unreliability and overheating—exacerbated by low-octane, high-sulfur gasoline—the introduction of European models helped shift consumer perception.
In 1985, Fiat launched the Uno Turbo in Europe, featuring a 1.3-liter engine with 105 cv. This technology eventually reached Brazil in 1994 with the launch of the Brazilian Uno Turbo, which utilized a 1.4-liter engine producing 118 cv. This was followed by the Tempra Turbo, equipped with a 2.0-liter engine delivering 165 cv.
Further advancements included the 1998 launch of the Marea Turbo, which featured a 2.0-liter five-cylinder engine generating 182 cv. The reliability of these systems was demonstrated through competition, such as the Marea Weekend's success in endurance racing.
