Jeep to launch large European SUV built with China’s Dongfeng
Jeep, under Stellantis, is developing a new large 4x4 sport‑utility vehicle for the European market in partnership with China’s Dongfeng Motor. The vehicle will be produced at Dongfeng’s Wuhan plant on a jointly created platform, ensuring it is not merely a rebadged Chinese model. Jeep will retain control over design, proportions and driving characteristics while Dongfeng provides the production capacity and engineering support. The launch is slated for 2027‑2028, with potential power‑train options that may include plug‑in hybrid, fully electric or EREV variants. This model aims to fill the segment gap left by the withdrawal of the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, targeting a niche similar to the Land Rover Defender. The effort is part of a broader Stellantis plan to grow Jeep’s European lineup from two to six models by 2030, complementing other upcoming models such as the electric Recon and two new B‑segment SUVs on the STLA One platform. Stellantis and Dongfeng have a joint investment of roughly $1.2 billion to produce Jeep and Peugeot vehicles in China, under the DPCA joint venture, and the new SUV will be sold in both Europe and China with other markets under review.
