Fiat marks 50 years of Brazil production with iconic 147 model

On 9 July 1976 Fiat inaugurated its Betim plant in Minas Gerais, launching the Fiat 147 as the first model built in Brazil. The 147, nicknamed “Cachacinha”, featured a transverse four‑cylinder engine and met the demand for small, fuel‑efficient cars during the 1970s oil‑price crisis.

In the following five decades the Betim factory has produced more than 18 million vehicles, exported over 4 million units to 37 countries, and drove rapid urban growth in the region, raising Betim’s population from roughly 60 000 to 400 000. Fiat now plans to add models such as the Strada and Argo to the plant’s line‑up, supported by a R$ 14 billion investment programme through 2030.
