FIBA lifts restrictions for Russian and Belarusian basketball individuals
FIBA has lifted restrictions on individual Russian and Belarusian basketball players, coaches, referees, and officials, allowing them to participate in international competitions with immediate effect. This decision aligns with recent recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the lifting of suspensions for athletes from these nations.
However, the ban on national teams and professional clubs from Russia and Belarus remains in place. FIBA stated it is working closely with the IOC and the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) to address logistical and security concerns regarding the potential reintegration of these teams. This includes planning for the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and various international competitions across all age groups in both traditional and 3x3 basketball.
A final decision regarding the return of national teams and clubs, as well as the implementation of appropriate anti-doping programs, is expected to be made during the FIBA Central Board meeting in December 2026.
