Fibre Excellence site requisitioned by French State for safety
The French State has requisitioned the Fibre Excellence paper pulp plant in Tarascon to ensure environmental and public safety. The facility, which is classified as a Seveso low-threshold site, is currently undergoing judicial liquidation. The decision follows reports that the judicial liquidator failed to implement urgent safety measures, such as fire defense systems and wastewater treatment, despite previous warnings from authorities.
The site remains a significant environmental risk, housing eleven tons of wood and various hazardous chemicals, including propane, hydrogen peroxide, and heavy fuel oil. Authorities aim to prevent chemical pollution from reaching the Rhône river.
In a separate development regarding the company's future, the French Communist Party (PCF) has called for the temporary nationalization of Fibre Excellence. The party is urging the State to provide 15 million euros to support the creation of an industrial consortium, citing the site's importance to France's industrial sovereignty and the forest-wood sector.
