Fibre optic cuts disrupt telecommunications in Northern Ghana

Triple fibre optic cable cuts have caused widespread telecommunications disruptions across five northern regions of Ghana and parts of the Oti Region. The outages have impacted voice, data, and mobile money services, affecting hundreds of thousands of residents, traders, and businesses.

Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation Minister Samuel Nartey George reported that three separate routes were severed: the Kintampo-Buipe route (MTN), the Wakawaka-Bamboi route (Telecel), and the Hohoe-Jasikan route (NITA). The scale of the damage includes service denial or significant degradation across 694 2G and 3G sites and 521 4G sites.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) confirmed that technical teams from affected network operators and the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) have been deployed to the sites. Restoration work is currently underway, and the NCA is monitoring the process to facilitate the earliest possible return to service.
