Fidel Castro's 1967 interview with Playboy magazine

In 1967, Fidel Castro granted an interview to Playboy magazine, a publication that was strictly prohibited in Cuba. Despite his public stance against bourgeois frivolity and the American empire, Castro met with photographer Lee Lockwood to reach a massive American audience.

The interview involved difficult questioning from Lockwood, who addressed topics such as whether Castro had deceived his compatriots regarding his communist intentions, the repression of political opponents, and Castro's frustration with Nikita Khrushchev over the removal of missiles without consultation.

Castro viewed the encounter as a strategic exchange, gaining a platform to reach millions of readers in exchange for enduring scrutiny. Following the interview, Castro sent Hugh Hefner a box of cigars with a handwritten note thanking him for the “pressures, tortures and abuses” of the interrogation.
