Fidelidade insurer disputes compensation in Elevador da Glória accident
The insurer Fidelidade has filed a contestation in the Lisbon Administrative Court regarding the September 3, 2025, accident of the Elevador da Glória, which resulted in 16 deaths and 24 injuries. The insurer, which covers Carris, stated that the elevator “could not be seen as a highly reliable means of transport” at the time of the incident.
The legal dispute involves a claim for approximately 1.05 million euros filed by the family of one of the victims. Fidelidade has challenged the specific request for 125,000 euros for death damages, labeling it “manifestly excessive” and arguing that Portuguese courts typically award between 50,000 and 90,000 euros in similar cases.
Fidelidade further argued that the disaster was not entirely unpredictable, citing previous accidents involving the elevator since 2018. The insurer has requested that the civil action be suspended until the conclusion of the Public Prosecutor's investigation to avoid contradictory decisions. The victim's family, represented by lawyer Nuno Pinto Coelho de Faria, expressed perplexity at the insurer's admission regarding the equipment's reliability.
