Fidelisbäck in Wangen im Allgäu may be Germany's oldest bakery

The Fidelisbäck bakery in Wangen im Allgäu, located in the southeastern part of Baden-Württemberg, is identified as potentially the oldest bakery in Germany. Historical records from city tax books trace the establishment back to 1505, listing Hans Wagener as an owner at that time.

Despite losing documentation during the Thirty Years' War and surviving two major fires in 1539 and 1793, the bakery remains a local landmark. The business, which includes a restaurant, has been operated by former employees since 2020. Traditional methods are still utilized, with breads and rolls being baked in a wood-fired oven. The bakery is particularly noted for its 'Seelen', a traditional savory wheat pastry from Swabia.
