Fidelity Bank utilizes PAPSS to facilitate African cross-border trade
The Pan African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) is facilitating easier cross-border trade for Nigerian businesses by addressing traditional payment barriers. Historically, regional expansion has been hindered by the need for foreign currencies like the US dollar or euro, reliance on intermediary banks, and high costs associated with multiple currency conversions.
Through the PAPSS infrastructure, businesses can conduct secure and near-instant transactions using local currencies. For example, a Nigerian customer can initiate a payment in Naira, and the beneficiary receives the equivalent value in their local currency. This model reduces the necessity for external foreign exchange and minimizes reliance on correspondent banks outside the continent.
Fidelity Bank Plc utilizes this system to enable transfers that can be completed in as little as 120 seconds, depending on market requirements. This increased speed and efficiency helps businesses manage cash flow, protect delivery timelines, and support the economic integration goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
