Hungary's Tisza Government Faces Economic Overhaul and Fidesz Crisis

In February 2024 the newly formed Tisza government launched a sweeping revision of Hungary’s economic policy. The cabinet, led by economy minister István Kapitány and budget adviser András Kármán, pledged to restore fiscal balance, create a wealth‑recovery office to audit controversial contracts from previous administrations, and fine‑tune the tax system toward greater fairness while retaining pension supplements. A new small‑and‑medium‑enterprise strategy aims to boost domestic exporters instead of relying on foreign‑owned assembly plants.

At the same time the ruling Fidesz party has been rocked by internal turmoil. Two senior ministers, Gergely Gulyás and Péter Szijjártó, resigned; a scandal involving former poet‑writer Dénes Orbán’s foundation paid hundreds of millions of forints in questionable fees, later recovered by Culture Minister Zoltán Tarr. Party officials acknowledge the organization’s “chaotic” state and the need for a communications overhaul, as highlighted by crisis‑communication expert Kornél Bőhm.
