Hungary's Fidesz Foundation Launches 'Szabadság Tér' Community Initiative

On July 31 2026 the Polgári Magyarországért Alapítvány, the foundation of the ruling Fidesz party, announced a new programme called Szabadság Tér. The initiative is presented as a community space, safety net and human‑resource centre for members of the "civil rear" who may be left alone when the foundations of Hungary’s democratic system are shaken.

Adam Kavecsánszki, director of the foundation, said the democratic foundations have been eroded, citing the recent removal of the President of the Republic, members of the Constitutional Court, opposition MPs and the former prime minister from electoral eligibility. He warned that foundations, intellectual workshops, talent‑development and scientific communities – including the Terror House Museum – face disappearance, leaving hundreds of people in existential uncertainty.

Szabadság Tér is intended to keep skilled professionals in contact, allow the exchange of knowledge and experience, and provide assistance to those who must restart their lives. In a related speech, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán urged a shift from self‑critical opposition politics to a strategy of resistance.
