Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi remembered for leadership in Egypt
Egypt marks the anniversary of the passing of Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, a prominent military leader and former Minister of Defense. Born in Cairo in 1935, Tantawi graduated from the Military Academy in 1956 and served in several major conflicts, including the 1967 war and the 1973 October War, where he commanded an infantry battalion.
Tantawi held numerous high-ranking positions, including Commander of the Second Field Army and Commander of the Republican Guard, before becoming Minister of Defense and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in 1991. He was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal in 1993.
Following the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011, Tantawi assumed leadership of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. He presided over Egypt during a critical transitional period characterized by political and security challenges, overseeing the implementation of a political roadmap until his retirement in August 2012.
