Fields Medalists warn of AI misalignment in mathematics
Twenty-five Fields Medal winners, including prominent mathematicians such as Terence Tao, have signed an open letter warning of a severe misalignment between AI companies and the mathematics community. The group argues that AI labs are using the resolution of complex mathematical problems as a benchmark for model capability, which conflicts with the core mathematical goal of achieving conceptual understanding and insight.
The controversy follows OpenAI’s announcement that one of its models resolved the Navier-Stokes equation—one of the seven Millennium Prize problems—in less than four days. This announcement has been overshadowed by allegations of improper research practices. Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster accused OpenAI of attempting to coerce him into omitting credit for a collaborator and questioned whether the company used existing research to accelerate its findings.
Furthermore, the mathematicians warn that the rush to produce AI-generated solutions may incentivize secrecy, undermine collaborative research, and lead to issues regarding plagiarism and improper attribution. In response to growing criticism from researchers, OpenAI recently withdrew its sponsorship of a mathematics event at CalTech.
