FIER Haarlem festival kicks off with living statues ahead of July 12 city celebration
On Saturday 4 July, the new Haarlem city festival FIER staged a series of “living statues” across the city centre. Performers posed as historic figures such as Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer, Wigbolt Ripperda and a Spanish commander, drawing crowds of tourists and residents who photographed and interacted with the motion‑less displays.
The showcase served as a kick‑off for the main event scheduled for Sunday 12 July, when the historic centre will host a week‑long programme of street theatre, music, historical parades, children’s activities and performances in local venues. Organisers say the festival is inspired by the 1572‑73 Siege of Haarlem and aims to celebrate freedom, community and the city’s heritage, with special‑brew beer and other nods to Haarlem’s past.
Local businesses welcomed the added foot traffic, and the lively atmosphere was praised as a promising addition to Haarlem’s cultural calendar.
