Fiesta Nacional del Poncho expands digital archive via Wikimedia Commons

Approximately 25 participants took part in the “Reconstructing the History of the Fiesta Nacional del Poncho” activity held on September 8. The event combined a guided tour of the Fiesta del Poncho Museum at the Catamarca Fairgrounds with a workshop focused on uploading photographs to Wikimedia Commons.

Led by officials from the Directorate of Heritage and Museums and representatives from Wikimedia Argentina, the initiative aimed to expand the digital documentation of Catamarca’s primary cultural celebration. Participants, including social communication students, learned about open-access principles and how to contribute images under licenses that allow for global reuse while maintaining authorship recognition.

As a result of the workshop, more than 30 new photographs were added to the digital archive of the Fiesta del Poncho on Wikimedia Commons, making the visual history of the event accessible to researchers, media, and the public worldwide.
