Fietsersbond and Haskoning launch national bollard safety check

The Fietsersbond and Haskoning are organizing a national ‘Paaltjescheckdag’ (Bollard Check Day) on Saturday, September 19, to address safety concerns regarding bollards on bicycle paths in the Netherlands.

While intended to prevent cars from entering cycle lanes, poorly placed or invisible bollards pose significant risks. According to the Fietsersbond, an average of six cyclists are injured daily due to collisions with these obstacles. The bollards can also make paths inaccessible for cyclists using wider, adapted bicycles.

During the event, cyclists across the country are encouraged to use an online map to report the locations of bollards. The goal is to provide municipalities with accurate data to help them improve path design and remove hazardous or non-compliant obstacles.
