FIFA and UEFA engage in legal battle over failed investment plan
The legal conflict between FIFA and UEFA has escalated into a high-stakes battle in United States courts. The dispute centers on the failed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project, a proposal by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to sell a 20 percent stake in FIFA’s commercial and organizational operations—including the World Cup—to private investors for approximately $4.2 billion.
UEFA has filed legal requests in several U.S. states to obtain documents related to the FFE plan, involving entities such as Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital. UEFA alleges that the $4.2 billion valuation was ‘absurdly low’ and not the result of a competitive auction. The European body is also considering criminal proceedings in Switzerland against Infantino for alleged ‘criminal mismanagement’ and ‘fraudulent pricing’ for personal benefit.
FIFA has responded by filing its own legal motions in U.S. courts, including New York and Florida, to block UEFA’s requests. FIFA characterizes UEFA’s actions as a ‘smear campaign’ designed to damage the reputation of its leadership rather than legitimate legal discovery. FIFA further argues that UEFA’s opposition is motivated by a desire to protect the financial dominance of European football by preventing smaller nations from gaining greater economic power through such investments.
